About Course Threads
Developed by the Townsend Center for the Humanities, Course Threads are now part of the fabric of the UC Berkeley undergraduate experience.
Sponsored by CSTMS (Center for Science, Technology, Medicine and Society), ISF ( Interdisciplinary Studies Field), Legal Studies, and the Department of Rhetoric, Course Threads allow Berkeley undergraduates to explore intellectual themes connecting courses across departments and disciplines. Without creating new majors or minors, Course Threads highlight connections among existing courses and help students develop a breadth and depth of knowledge in particular topics.
Following a thread is easy: over the course of their studies at Berkeley, students enroll in at least three courses tagged in the course catalog as part of a particular Course Thread, such as Visual Cultures, Sciences & Society, Law & Humanities, Carceral Geographies: Beyond the Prison, and more. Students may then participate in a semester-end symposium at the Townsend Center to receive a certificate of completion of their thread.
