Onion Cells

Shown at 100x magnification and died blue to highlight the nuclei of the cells, this image of a grouping of onion skin cells displays not only the nuclei of the cells but the also the cell wall, a feature which sets them apart from animal cells. This rigid cell wall provides plant cells with greater rigidity and support than the more malleable animal cells, and creates the distinctive paving stone-esque patterning featured in the image of the onion cells.
