The Magna Carta

The Magna Carta, or "The Great Charter," was drafted in 1215 and forced on King John of England by his subjects as a constitution to protect the people. The Charter required the English Monarch to proclaim certain rights and liberties to his subjects, most importantly that no "freeman" could be punished by anything other than the law of the land.
