APA & Gender Identity Disorder Protest Poster

Held on May 18th, 2009, the protest featured in this poster was held to challenge the current APA (American Psychiatric Association) definition of GID, or Gender Identity Disorder, as a formally classified mental illness. This definition of GID as a mental illness has been seen by many within the psychiatric, transgender, and gender-variant communities as an outdated portion of the DSM-IV, citing the prior inclusion of homosexuality as a mental illness in the DSM-III, and calls for the revision of the DSM text to remove GID have been forwarded by protests such as the one held in May 2009, as well as at conferences and meetings between leaders from the psychiatric and gender-variant communities.
