Ambiguous vs. Intuitive Stove Design- The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman

An example of what Don Norman calls "ambiguous" and "naturally mapped" designs. The stove top on the left was designed "ambiguously," or without regard to the set-up of the burners. Alternatively, the stove top on the right was designed using a process called "natural mapping," where the dials are arranged in a manner that reflects the set-up of the burners, creating a stovetop that the human-brain can more efficiently process since the dials and burners mirror each other.
