Frequently Asked Questions
+ What is a Course Thread?
A Course Thread is a series of courses from multiple departments and disciplines that are related to one another by intellectual theme. The organization of a Course Thread is far more flexible than an interdisciplinary major or a minor.
+ Who can join a Course Thread?
Any undergraduate from any department.
- + What do I have to do to join?
+ What are the requirements?
- Create an account on the Course Threads website.
- Successfully complete three courses in one Thread (from at least two different departments).
- After successfully completing three courses in a thread, participate in one Course Threads Symposium (organized each semester at the Townsend Center).
- Submit an on-line final evaluation form and submit a transcript.
+ Can I complete more than one Course Thread?
There’s no limit on the number of Threads you may complete. Please consult with the undergraduate advisor in your department to decide what is best for your course of study at Berkeley.
Please note that each Thread requires participation in a Course Threads Symposium. If you complete two Threads you will have the option of participating in two different symposia, or giving two presentations in a single symposium.
+ How do I find courses in my chosen Course Thread?
Browse courses on your Thread's page. Threads are listed in the right-hand column.
+ Can I count the same course in two different Threads?
Yes! You may count a maximum of one course in two different Threads. The other two courses in each Thread must be unique to that Thread.
+ Can I count 1 and 2 unit courses toward the completion of a Course Thread?
Yes! That’s the best part. Because this is not a major or minor, all courses are weighted equally regardless of unit value.
+ What do I have to do for the Course Threads Symposium?
The Course Threads Symposium allows you the occasion to reflect on your experience as a Course Threads participant and to share what you have learned with your fellow students. You will be asked to give a 10 minute presentation in which you discuss themes, readings, classroom conversations, assignments, etc. of each course in the thread and share how the courses in the thread related to one another. For more information, visit the Course Threads Symposium page.
+ How do I get a copy of my transcript?
Once you have completed three or more courses in a thread and wish to participate in the symposium, bring a hard copy or electronic copy of your transcript to the Townsend Center. Log in to Bear Facts to display your transcript, make an appointment to come into the Townsend Center (firstname.lastname@example.org), and bring the transcript to the Townsend Center (220 Stephens Hall).
