In tracking the evolution of the American city, we’ll look at the economics of city life, at the organization of metropolitan political power, and at the aesthetics of the urban scene to see how core themes of American culture have endured over time while continuously adjusting to new circumstances. Urban America has been built, over and over again, by people who have come from outside the city. How American cities have accommodated those outsiders, and how those newcomers have shaped their cities by becoming insiders themselves, is a central story of the urban experience.
