 The course presents the origins and history of ancient astronomy from Mesopotamia to the Greco-Roman world. Readings from primary texts, including Babylonian astronomical and astrological documents and Greek treatises such as Ptolemy's Almagest are used. Problems of the calendar and of planetary motion are of special interest. Focus here is on the sun and planets, the earliest developments of a mathematical route to astronomical problem-solving, and the earliest known written evidence of astronomical model-making and theory.
