Literature & Photography's Expanded Fields
General Catalog Course Title:
Studies in Hispanic Literature
Terms Offered:
Spring 2016
Fall 2012

This course will look at photography and literature from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, paying particular attention to moments of expansion of the mediums into areas or fields outside themselves. How can we speak of novels when they don’t quite look like novels, or how can we speak of photographs when they no longer look like photographs? The 1920’s, 1960’s and the present day will be three of the moments we will pay particular attention to these movements. The class does not require a knowledge of photography, art history, or the critical languages of these, as we will, in the first weeks of the semester, consolidate a critical language for visual studies.
