Sociological Theory I
General Catalog Course Title:
Sociological Theory I
Terms Offered:
Fall 2015
Fall 2014

This course introduces "classical social theory" defined as the attempt  to explain dramatic social structural change. We will address three exemplary approaches to this problem: dialectical (exemplified by Karl Marx), evolutionary (exemplified by Émile Durkheim) and contingent/comparative (exemplified by Max Weber). The course aims to teach students how each thinker's underlying theoretical assumptions produces a different account of change. Students will be evaluated on the basis of a mix of writing assignments, and in class examinations.
