This course should help upper division students gain knowledge and skills necessary for critical consumption of the professional literature in Sociology and related social science disciplines. It should assist in preparation for the design and execution of original scholarly work at the advanced undergraduate level. Issues of study design, methods of data collection and tools for data analysis initially discussed in Sociology 5 are examined in greater depth. Attention is given to the formulation of the research problem and the design and execution of studies utilizing a range of qualitative and quantitative techniques. The practicalities of drawing valid conclusions from empirical data are given great emphasis.
