Exploration of the development and use of the concept of information in biology as compared to computation and human communication. We will consider how problems of function, reference, and significance arise and are debated in discussions of evolution, molecular biology, cognitive neuroscience, and human language. A major focus will be the contrast between the technical concept of information and its use in semiotic theories.
