General Catalog Course Title:
Hot Culture: The Role of Chile Peppers in Global Identites
Terms Offered:
Spring 2014

Using the origin and history of the spicy chile pepper, Capsicum, we will seek out the timing, spread and use of this spice across the globe, as well as the range of feelings about it and the meanings it evokes in each society we cover. We will include its use and meaning in Latin American, Asia, and North America through reading, seeking, and discussing how Capsicum is incorporated into people's cuisines and self identites. Any student interested in cuisine, food, and identity would enjoy this group search. This seminar is part of the Connections@Cal initiative.
