This is a difficult course on the theory of pedagogy and the pedagogy of theory. We shall read the classics (Marx, Durkheim, and Weber), drawing out their theories of education, and then move onto Gramsci, Bourdieu,Willis, Freire, Illich, Dewey, Horton and Hooks. As our case study we will take sociology 101A-B, examining its pedagogy through the lens of these theorists. Requirements include weekly reading notes and several essays. It will be run as a seminar. Open only to those who have passed 101-102.
