Recent crises in the Middle East and Africa (coups, electoral violence, revolutions and uprisings) are increasingly being addressed by a combination of local, regional and international actors in innovative and complex ways. While the point of departure for each country is starkly different, the emerging norm is for complex political transitions leading to the return of constitutional government. This course examines the mechanics of transition through a comparative approach and scrutinezes the roles of the United Nations, African Union and the League of Arab Nations.
